Colin Turkington is one of the biggest names in British motor sport. He has raced in the UK’s top motor racing series – the BTCC – since 2002 and in that time become one of the most successful drivers in its 50-year history in terms of race wins and won the outright title in 2009.

But before reaching the dizzy heights of touring car fame, Colin spent a decade working his way through the ranks having originally started out at the age of 11 in Cadet and the Junior ICA karts in Northern Ireland. He continued his career for several more years in autograss events still in his native Ulster. Finally in 1998 he took to full circuit racing and it bore immediate success as he won the Northern Irish Metro title. The UK mainland was next up and from 1999-2001 he was thrust in front of the huge BTCC raceday crowds as he competed in the supporting Ford Fiesta category – a title he also won in 2001.

Colin’s break into the BTCC came in 2002 with the WSR team for which he has raced MGs and BMWs since – save in 2005 when he was signed by the factory Vauxhall VX Racing squad for a season. There have also in recent years been several highly successful ‘one-off’ outings in the World Touring Car Championship with WSR – including a third place outright on his debut at Brands Hatch – and in 2011 Colin raced a turbo charged BMW in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.

Notably, Colin was also selected as a first-year recruit onto the MSA’s Driver Elite scheme in 2007. The same year he also won BMW Motorsport’s annual Sports Trophy League – scoring the highest out of more than 100 drivers racing BMWs in various touring car series around the world.
