Courses are laid out in any suitable grass or stubble field – although, once a year, there’s even an autocross held on the beach at Weston-Super-Mare! Competing cars range from mildly modified road cars, which have often been driven to the meeting – and, hopefully, home again afterwards - right up to the strange-looking homebuilt ‘Specials’.
Autocross is a club-level sport, so usually the spectators’ car park is the same as the competitors’ paddock, and you may well find that driver you’ve parked next to is the local champion. Autocross drivers are very approachable, and will be happy to chat about how they are getting on and, if you’re interested, give you an idea of how to get into the sport yourself.
As autocrosses are time trials, make sure you visit the organisers’ caravan during the day to check on competitors’ times; often, trophies are won and lost by less than one second.
