It takes place at purpose-built circuits such as Lydden Hill in Kent, and Croft in north Yorkshire.
Rallycross combines circuit racing with rallying, and one of its most interesting aspects is the ever-changing surface. Drivers have the added problem of losing grip as they go from asphalt onto the gravel part of the course. A race can often be won or lost by inches if a driver has a sideways ‘moment’ in the final corner – especially when they are under pressure!
The racing in both heats and finals is always hard-fought. When the start lights go green, up to 15 cars charge for the first corner, all trying to grab the lead. It’s not unknown for the leaders to enter and leave the corner four abreast, as no-one gives or expects any quarter.
The best drivers go through a series of heats before going head-to-head in their respective class finals – and it’s not always the fastest, most expensive vehicles that make it to the winner’s podium. A well-driven older, but reliable, car will often triumph over a newer, but more troublesome, rival.
